Captain Jerry Beaver

Captain Jerry Beaver is a well-known charter boat captain in New Jersey waters. His boat Teacher's Pet (38' Topaz) is the most recent of a long list of fishing boats. Captain Jerry started fishing at a very young age. His father was an avid fisherman and he carted his oldest son, Jerry, along on most all of his fishing trips. Growing up in central Pennsylvania along the Susquehanna River, Jerry was not a stranger to the river banks. He won his first open tournament at the age of 12, and holds an impressive history of fresh water catches. Relocation brought him to Highlands, New Jersey, where his passion for fishing grew even larger. Capt. Jerry recounts those early days of fluke fishing with his parents. "My father and mother would come to New Jersey at least once a month in the summer; my mother loved fluke fishing and my father loved Blue fishing and Bluefin tuna fishing. Fluke fishing was really good back then and there were a lot of Bluefin in the Mud Hole during the Fall. The Sandy Hook area provides great fishing and we all wanted to take advantage of it."

When asked about his favorite fishing, Capt. Jerry needed to prioritize his answer-- offshore trolling is first and inshore chunking is his second favorite. He further stated, "I used to watch Wide World of Sports on TV when I was very young and trolling for large game fish just fascinated me. I have been bait fishing since I could stand up and the challenge of artificial baits reaches its highest point when trolling offshore. This was one of the reasons for the change to my most recent boat, the Topaz as compared to the prior Henriques. I wanted the increased speed to maximize offshore trips. I loved the Henriques, it was an awesome boat, but I wanted the faster 27-knot speed. My newest boat , the 38' Topaz, holds an un- believable record for raising fish. It was previously named America II out of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and all this boat ever did was troll!" The Topaz name carries a strong reputation, and Capt. Jerry is thrilled for the opportunity to bear the new name of Teacher's Pet on this well-known boat.

Striped bass fishing in the Sandy Hook area has become increasingly popular over the past few years. This coincides with the increased number of bass charters on the Teacher's Pet. "Striped bass is one of our most popular trips", says Capt. Jerry. "From early May through late November we are fishing for bass. Early season chunking is a favorite." Capt. Jerry also likes to mix his bass fishing with some bottom fishing. We like to customize a trip to the preferences of the charter. When the blackfish, sea bass, ling, or cod are available, the combination trip makes for a great day on the water"! When it comes right down to it, Capt. Jerry enjoys his boat, the trips, and being out on the water no matter what the charter is fishing for. However, it should also be fair to mention that Capt. Jerry does not limit his expertise to his charter trips; he is also a popular speaker on the seminar circuit. He has even held classes on local area fishing and written articles on the subject. Fluke fishing, blue fishing, striped bass chunking, live lining for striped bass, eeling and worming for striped bass, striped bass Trolling, weakfishing, shark fishing, black fishing and in-shore Tuna Trolling are some of his previous topics. " I really enjoy getting out and talking to people about fishing, the exchange of information and ideas is what makes the sport so interesting.
If you have the opportunity to fish with captain jerry you can see what separates him from the other captains. He has an outgoing personally and is at home talking fishing. And most of all he wants to catch fish and have a good time doing it. "One of the things that I enjoy about the charter boat business is our repeat customer. Some have been with us for many years and they make the day on the water so enjoyable. If you have the opportunity to fish a lot of trips together, chance are some of those trips are outstanding, your regular charters can take the good with the bad, the day is also so relaxed because the charter and us know what to expect. We take care of our regulars and the take care of us, that's how it should be".
